Watching runners stream down Cainscross Road in the sunshine to cross the finish line at this year’s Stroud Half Marathon was a truly inspiring sight. Huge congratulations to everyone who took part — it was a brilliant celebration of effort, community, and the joy of movement.
As a Physiotherapist who works closely with people over 45, I was especially delighted to see so many continuing their love for running into their later years. Running can absolutely remain a lifelong passion — you just need to give your body the support it deserves. Here are my top three tips to help you keep running well, injury-free, and enjoying every mile.
1. Listen to Your Body
While you might still feel twenty in your head, your body sometimes has a different opinion! Pay attention when it starts to complain. You may need a little more recovery time now and then, or notice niggles that don’t fade as quickly. Don’t push through persistent pain — get it checked out. Remember, rest and recovery are just as important as the training itself.
2. Strengthen for Longevity
Strength training is one of the best investments you can make in your running. It improves joint stability, reduces injury risk, and even boosts performance. You don’t need hours in the gym — a few targeted exercises for your legs, hips, and core, two to three times a week, can make a world of difference.
3. Invest in the Right Footwear
Your running shoes are one of your most important tools. “Good” doesn’t necessarily mean “expensive” — it means right for you. Some runners thrive in cushioned shoes, others prefer minimalist or neutral ones. The key is comfort. It might take some trial and error to find your perfect pair, but once you do, you’ll know it.
With the right mindset and approach, running can continue to be a source of strength, wellbeing, and joy for many years to come. Let’s keep that post-race energy going and make every run a step toward better health.
